Can an A3070 be THE definitive Amiga 3000 scsi box?

When I decided to transform my A3000 in a "little monster",
I began looking for a SCSI box where fitting a CD burner
that could also aesthetically suit the A3000 original desktop case.

In those days an Italian ebayer was selling an A3070.
It is a very rare device that Commodore sold with A3000UX, such as the A3000 Unix version.
It looks like a "little" A3000 and was equipped with the SCSI Caliper CP150 tape drive.
(more info)

The Caliper drive has a standard 50pins connector
and the A3070 box provides an external DB25 port for additional SCSI devices.

In short... that was THE scsi box I was looking for!

My second aim was to fit a good SCSI CD-R with the right look.
A Plextor 12/10/32S has been my definitive choice!

AN IMPORTANT NOTE TO READ BEFORE STARTING
These units are very rare.
All steps showed in this page are 100% reversible.
You can restore the original A3070 state in less than 5 minutes...

Well... the works can begin.

This is the A3070 in its original appearence.

The Caliper tape drive...

... and the back of the unit.
The main cable comes out of the internal.
No external PSU is required, it is fitted inside the box.
A switch has provided to turn on/off the device.

The label shows compatible voltages: a great range!

We have to unscrew only a screw to open the box.

The box is open!

Four buttonholes hook the drive's screws to fix the bottom cover.

We go to unscrew the drive.

Notice the particular shape of the original screws.

Here are the internal connectors.

The tape drive is out!

And now the Plextor CD burner...

... and the main problem of this conversion!
The internal A3070 scsi connector is soldered on a pcb and its orientation is wrong!
Pins 1-2 are in the pins 49-50 position and viceversa.
In short, we have to rotate it of 180°.
Unfortunately, the connector pcb doesn't fit in this way.
We need a M/F flat cable...

... and through my parts I've found a 50pins flat cable with male/female connectors.
It comes out from an old IBM PS/2 35SX.
It is perfect for this need!

The cable is too long so I've added a female connector to the right position.

It looks fine, isn't it?
Don't forget to set up jumpers in according to your configuration before fitting the burner.

The original screws (left) are different than the ones that fit with modern units.
So, we have to change them... that's not a big problem.

Do you remember the bottom cover's buttonholes?
Well... we have to leave screws a bit out.

It fits perfectly also with new screws!

The latest screw and...

... we can test it.

It works!!!

Our modded A3070 in its final destination!

6th September UPDATE!

I've connected a custom audio cable from the internal unit to a Toccata input
so I can listen to Audio CDs, too.
